Baking soda can be used for so much more than just keeping your fridge from smelling bad. It works so well for so many things that I always have at least 2 containers on hand. (Of course, one stays in the fridge).

You can use it as an antacid, to make your teeth whiter, and it can even help with a sore throat. But this inexpensive household good can be used for much more than that.

  1. Freshen Your Breath
Yes, you can make toothpaste from it, but everyone already knows that. Just add a teaspoon of baking soda to a small glass of water and swish it around in your mouth to neutralize bad breath.
  2. Deodorize Your Trash Can
If your garbage can smells, dump some baking soda in the bottom of it.
  3. Make Your Carpet Smell Better

If your carpet smells like your pets, take a box of baking soda and shake it all over your carpet. Leave it on overnight if possible, then vacuum it up. As an added bonus, it’ll deodorize your vacuum cleaner as well.

  1. Remove Rust from Battery Connections

Mix 3 parts baking soda to one part water to make a thick paste. Be sure to disconnect the terminals of your car battery before you start though. Once you’re ready, spread the paste on the rusty terminals and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. If it’s really rusty, scrub it off with some steel wool. Otherwise, a toothbrush will do just fine.

  1. Fix Your Stinky Shoes

Pour some baking soda in your shoes. Don’t forget to empty them out before you wear them though!

  1. Put Out Grease Fires

If you’re cooking with oil, have baking soda ready just in case. Don’t leave it in the cabinet. You’ve essentially got two options with a grease fire: smother it (it’s a little scary to try to cover a pan with a lid when the pan is on fire) or toss baking soda the fire.

  1. Bug Bite Relief

Mix baking soda with a little bit of water and put it directly on the bite. This also works for poison ivy and doesn’t seriously dry out your skin like other OTC solutions.

  1. Make Fluffier Omelets

For every 3 eggs, use 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda. The baking soda reacts with the eggs to create tiny air pockets.

  1. Exfoliate Your Skin

Forget expensive spa products. Just mix 3 parts baking soda and one part water. Gently rub in a circular motion on your face.

  1. Prevent & Kill Weeds

This is not something I would advise using in your garden as it works by increasing the salinity. But it works perfectly to prevent weeds from growing in cracks in the pavement or as a spot treatment near your garden. Sprinkle it in the cracks. For spot treatment, spread 1 teaspoon of baking soda evenly over the entire plant.

  1. Reduce Ulcer Pain

Drink a glass of water with 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda.

  1. Clean Your Microwave

Put a teaspoon of baking soda on a wet rag and scrub your microwave. The baked on food should come off fairly easily (you will have to apply a little bit of elbow grease).

  1. Clean Your Drains

This should also help with a slow drain. Then dump a ½ cup of baking soda down it. Follow with 1 cup of vinegar. Put a drain stopper on top – lightly. If the issue is with a bathtub, don’t screw in the stopper. This is just to keep the reaction down where the clog is and prevent most of it from leaking out the top.

If your problem is mostly due to grease, precede the process by dumping a pot of boiling water down the drain. Then after it’s done, follow with more boiling water.

Please note that you should not try this if you’ve already used a store-bought drain cleaner.
