Having beautiful skin doesn’t have to be reserved for people with lots of time and money on their hands. There are some simple, powerful strategies you can use to get the complexion you’ve always wanted.

The first step is knowing your type of skin.

Skin Types

It’s relatively simple. If your skin is naturally oily, don’t add more oil to it. If it’s dry, don’t strip away what little natural oils you’ve got. The price tag on a bottle isn’t everything. Look for products that will moisturize if you have dry skin and the opposite for oily. It’s basic, but it’s an important first step that people often get wrong.

Sunscreen Isn’t Your Enemy

Getting appropriate sun exposure is incredibly important. You don’t want to get a sunburn or excess UVA rays. Please be aware that UVB rays are the ones that will help you produce vitamin D. UVA rays are responsible for sunburn, wrinkles, and dried out skin. They can pass through glass, so if you’ll be in the car for a long time, be sure to put some sunscreen on. A good sunscreen doesn’t use nanoparticles (it usually sits on top of your skin). Stay away from sprays at all costs. You can easily inhale the sunscreen and it’s difficult to apply evenly.

Put Your Phone on Speaker

Heat and sweat are two things you generally want to avoid if you’ve got issues with pimples. Having your phone pressed to your face for any period of time can increase your chances of a breakout. So just put your phone on speaker mode to avoid the situation.

The Problem with Sugary Foods

Stay away from high glycemic foods. Sugar will make your body create insulin. Insulin causes your body to create oil-producing hormones. Oil-producing hormones create acne. The idea that French fries and candy bars can create acne isn’t wrong. But it also includes fruit like pineapple. Just be aware of what you’re putting into your body.

Eat Foods Rich in Vitamin C

However, feel free to eat foods rich in vitamin C (as long as you’re not overdoing it and consuming too much sugar along with your food). Vitamin C can help create collagen and attacks free radicals. Collagen plumps up your skin, filling in fine lines and wrinkles.

Moisturize Your Skin

You can also moisturize your skin from the inside. Sure, cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil can go a long way in warding off dry skin, but you should also mind what you’re eating. An omega-3 supplement or foods high in fatty acids can hydrate your skin and prevent inflammation. For an omega-3 supplement, opt for krill oil since it’s got a much higher absorption rate than fish oil and doesn’t go rancid as quickly. For food, go for avocados (for their good fat content) and salmon.

Avocado and Honey Mask

While we’re at it, grab an avocado and 1 Tablespoon of raw, organic honey to create a face mask you’ll probably want to eat. Just mash up the avocado and mix in the honey until it resembles a paste. Put it on your face and leave it there for 15 minutes. When you’re done, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Don’t scrub.

Avocado provides a bunch of beneficial nutrients (unsaturated fat, vitamin E, vitamin C) and honey is anti-microbial. Honey is key here if you’ve got a problem with acne. It’ll help clear out the bacteria and reduce your breakouts.
