Everyone wants a better brain. The scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz brought it into focus, but humans have been questing for a way to become smarter since the beginning of time. He was able to obtain a brain from the Wizard, but there is no such wizard for the rest of us.

However, a recent study has revealed that you don’t need to rely on anyone else. You can just rely on yourself.

Building a Better Brain

There are a lot of things you can do to build a better brain. Some are easy. Some aren’t.

At the top of the list are items like exercising and meditating – two things most people wish they could do, but have difficulty doing either because of motivation, time, or the inability to turn their minds off.

You can also do your best to remove sugar from your diet. But it’s one of the most addictive substances on the planet, so it can also be hard to do. Some encouragement though: once you’ve stopped eating sugar for a while, you won’t crave it anymore. And if you do have some, you may find that it’s entirely too sweet and tastes absolutely vile. (Yes, that’s a personal experience).

So yes, you can do all those things and build yourself a better brain. But let’s get back to the study.

Brain Study and Age

Researchers surveyed and analyzed data from 5,748 adults in the US between the ages of 65 and 98. Half of the participants completed a survey in 2008, while the other half completed the survey in 2010. Seniors who were determined to have abnormal cognitive functioning at the beginning of the study were removed.

The researchers tested memory skills and cognitive functioning at the beginning of the study and then again 2-4 years later. What they found was incredible.

Among the questions participants were asked, they were questioned about how old they felt. The researchers concluded that seniors who felt older than their age were 18% more likely to develop cognitive impairment and 29% more likely to develop dementia.

So is the answer to simply feel younger and you’ll have a better functioning brain than your peers?

To some extent, it is exactly that simple. But it’s still going to take a bit of work.

How to Feel Younger

Generally speaking, the people who feel younger are the ones that you see in health ads everywhere. They’re running through fields, enjoying the sunshine, and playing with their grandchildren. The young at heart will stay young in their mind because of a few simple things they’re doing that others their age aren’t. Chief among those is enjoying life.

You can help improve your happiness by doing much of what you would do to increase your health.

  • Exercise – exercise releases endorphins and reduces stress
  • Eat better – having a poor diet can make you feel miserable
  • Get sunshine – who doesn’t feel better after some time in the sun?

There are plenty of other ways to increase your happiness. Having a hobby and meditating are also terrific. If your hobby is gardening, you get quadruple points (exercise, sunshine, you’re probably having fun, and you’re probably eating better).
