As the seasons are changing, as goes the weather…

And dramatic changes in weather often lead to the onset of common colds.

But that doesn’t mean it’s time to turn to your closest drug store to pick up vapor rub. The commercial vapor rubs out there can be potentially detrimental to your health. Some can actually increase the amount of mucus you’re producing and only make it feel like you’re able to breathe easier.

Here’s how to make your own vapor rub that actually delivers on its promises.

Natural Vapor Rub

When you or your kids are sick, sleep is one of the most important pieces to overcoming your cold. But because your nose is stuffed up, it can be difficult to actually get to sleep. You lay on one side, but it seems like you can’t breathe, so you roll to the other side. Your kids, meanwhile, sound like they’ve got an ocean of boogers in their nose.

Give this natural vapor rub a try and sleep soundly tonight.

What You’ll Need

¼ cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons grated bees wax (Buy At Amazon)
2 tablespoons shea butter (Buy At Amazon)
10 drops peppermint essential oil (Buy At Amazon)
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil (Buy At Amazon)
Glass jar

Directions

  1. Melt the wax in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, put a couple of inches of water in a saucepan. Put the wax in the jar and place it in the water. Heat it until it melts.
  2. Add the other oils.
  3. Stir to combine.
  4. After it cools, add your essential oils.

If this recipe seems small, that’s because it is. One of the major differences with this vapor rub and the ones you’ll find on the shelf is that it doesn’t contain anything to prevent mold from growing on it. If you clean your hands before you dip your fingers into your jar, it will last a bit longer. You can also use a popsicle stick to remove what you’ll need. If you decide to do that, you can double the batch.

If you’re using this recipe for a child under the age of 2, use less essential oil and more coconut oil. Never rub directly under a child’s nose. Just apply a little bit directly to the chest and/or on the feet.
