The dreaded headache. It’ll make you stop whatever it is you’re doing and completely divert your attention to the pain you’re suffering.
Behind at work? Are kids running all over the place?
Forget it. This headache is getting the best of you and now it’s making you angry and you want to sleep it off more than anything else.
Often, painkillers are used to get rid of them, but there are better remedies you can use to get rid of a headache.
Water
When you have a headache, it’s your body telling you something and it absolutely wants you to listen. Drinking water is always the first place I start. Sadly, water is often overlooked in the workplace. Most people simply don’t drink enough.
There’s even something called a water-deprivation headache.
By the way, if you stand up quickly and your vision fades out for a half second, it’s also a sign you’re dehydrated. So drink up!
Poor Posture/Computer Screens
A cramped neck and staring at a computer screen (or a fixed point) for too long can bring on headaches. If it’s the latter, make sure you’re looking away from your screen every 10-15 minutes at a point far off in the distance. It’s obviously easier if you have a window. If you don’t, just work on becoming friends with your cubicle neighbors.
If you’ve got poor posture, try yoga on your off hours to fix your posture. In the meantime, get up and stretch at least every half hour.

Caffeine
Caffeine is an amazing substance. In case you’ve never noticed, it’s also the primary difference between many regular painkillers and those designated for migraines. As long as it’s not after 3pm, feel free to have a cup of coffee (unless you’re dehydrated). If you drink it past 3, there’s a chance you may not fall asleep when it’s time to go to bed… And you’ll just be setting yourself up for another headache the following day.
Magnesium
That cup of coffee may help you in more ways than one. Magnesium deficiency is believed to be at the root of many migraines. Though you’re only going to get about 7mg of magnesium from coffee and you need between 200-600mg per day, so it’s best to look for other sources as well.
Other top sources of magnesium include beans, seeds, whole grains, dark leafy greens, avocados, and dark chocolate.
Increase Your Blood Flow
You can get rid of a headache by increasing blood flow. You could always try exercising, but who’s got time for that at work? Though, as an added bonus, you’ll also relieve some of your pent-up stress.
But there are a number of other ways you can increase your blood flow.
Like with peppermint and/or lavender.
Just put a couple of drops of peppermint or lavender essential oil on a cloth or kleenex and inhale. You can’t drink lavender, but you can have peppermint tea. You can also do the same with ginger lemon tea.
Or, feel free to combine peppermint oil with a carrier oil and massage it into your temples.
Feverfew
Feverfew tea has been found to be beneficial as well. The mechanism here is believed to be that feverfew constricts your blood vessels. If you’ve got a migraine, it may be due to the fact your blood vessels have expanded and are hitting your nerves.
Food-Related Headaches
If you frequently get headaches and you’re only getting temporary relief from any of the solutions above, you may have a food intolerance or allergy.
This is going to require some detective work on your part because, of course, headaches do not always immediately appear as soon as you stick a piece of bread in your mouth.
Keep a food journal and jot down how you feel after eating it. If you get a headache, write it down and circle it in red or write it in giant bold letters. After a week or several headaches, go back through your food journal and see if you notice a pattern. If you do, try eliminating that food. If not, keep track for a few more weeks and see if anything stands out.
